Citizenship And Rights Of Transgender Communities In Karnataka
Citizenship And Rights Of Transgender Communities In Karnataka
Intervention
To enable the transition of low-income Transgender communities in seven districts of Karnataka (Hassan. Kolar, Yadgir, Bidar, Bellary, Raichur and Chickmagalur) from the realm of criminality to Citizenship, enabling collective claim-making vis-a-vis rights and entitlements recently recognized by the State.
Three areas have been identified as priorities in this regard:
Community Organising and Advocacy
Community-based health care
Economic and Financial Stability
The project is a first big step in the realization of full citizenship for Transgender communities. The main objectives of the project are to establish a sensibility of citizenship within the Transgender community, mechanisms for the articulation of collective voice and of deliberative democracy, to inculcate the practices of saving, establish community-based health care institutions and establish a livelihood program. Given that this is early in the history of full citizenship for Transgender folk, these must be seen as experiments that we will learn from with the intention of improving the intervention for expansion to other districts and communities.
